From vendor exit to owned IoT platform

Industry

Maritime

When Optimarin needed to leave their IoT platform vendor and build their own solution, Devspace built it. What started as a platform replacement became a multi-year embedded partnership spanning product development, strategic advisory, and a customer portal rebuild - with the same team present across every chapter.

From vendor exit to owned IoT platform

The challenge

Optimarin is a leading provider of ballast water treatment systems - hardware that ships rely on to manage one of the most tightly regulated environmental processes in maritime operations. Like many industrial companies, they had built their digital customer experience on a third-party IoT platform vendor. When that relationship had to end, they faced a decision with real consequences: find another vendor, or own the platform themselves.

They chose to build. That meant taking on full ownership of a platform for data capture, aggregation, and analysis - collecting real-time information from vessels operating worldwide and making it useful for the people responsible for those systems. The engineering challenge was significant. The regulatory and operational context made the quality bar higher still.

Later, as the business evolved, a second challenge emerged: their customer portal had been built on a no-code platform that was limiting what they could do. The decision to replace it with a custom-built solution brought Devspace back into the same conversation - with the same team already carrying the context.

What we did

The engagement began with a platform replacement. It grew into something longer.

IoT platform - from vendor exit to ownership

We designed and built a full-scale IoT platform for data capture, aggregation, and analysis - pulling telemetry from Optimarin systems on vessels worldwide and making it available through dashboards and operational reports. Built for scalability and secure operations using a modern architecture and AppFarm.

Customer portal rebuild

When Optimarin decided to replace their no-code customer portal with a custom solution, we ran the strategic scoping and led the build. Moving from a constrained no-code environment to a purpose-built portal gave Optimarin full control over the customer experience and the flexibility to evolve it as the product roadmap demanded.

Ongoing embedded partnership

This isn't a closed case study. The same Devspace team has been embedded across multiple chapters of Optimarin's product development - adapting to shifting priorities, new initiatives, and an evolving business. The relationship grew because the work kept delivering.

The outcome

Optimarin now operates a future-ready digital platform they fully own - one that strengthens customer loyalty, provides a competitive advantage in a highly regulated maritime market, and enables new digital services that weren't possible on third-party infrastructure.
